A farmer named Deepak and his new bride, Phool Kumari, are returning to their village in 2001 in the fictitious state of Nirmal Pradesh. They board a packed passenger train with numerous other recently wed couples.
As per tradition, the brides cover their entire face with a ghoonghat (veil) and wear identically colored bridal clothes. After falling asleep, Deepak awakens in the middle of the night to discover that he has reached his objective. Phool is left behind on the train with the other groom, Pradeep, when he disembarks with the wrong bride amid the darkness and confusion caused by his haste to go.
His family extends a warm welcome to the couple, but they are surprised to learn that she is the incorrect bride. She lies about her origins and offers them a fake name, Pushpa. Phool discovers the error at another station, but the station master is powerless to assist her since she does not know the name of Deepak’s village.
In addition, she won’t return home because she doesn’t want to disgrace her family. Manju Mai, who owns a tea stall on the platform, assists her in her decision to stay at the station in case Deepak comes looking.
In a desperate attempt to locate Phool, Deepak files a report with SI Shyam Manohar. Manohar believes Pushpa could be a thief. He follows her and witnesses her purchasing bus tickets, using a cell phone, and selling jewelry. Pushpa makes the family of Deepak amicable. In the meantime, Phool assists Manju Mai at the tea stand, works there, manufactures kalakand, and gains independence.
When Manohar finds out that Pushpa’s real name is Jaya, he arrests her because he believes she is a member of a gang of robbers. Jaya discloses that she intended to enrol in an organic farming course in Dehradun, but her family forced her into a forced marriage to Pradeep, and she does not want to go back because of Pradeep‘s abuse of her.
Pradeep shows up for Jaya at the police station. In front of the police, he slaps her and makes threats to get her mother to pay him the whole dowry. Manohar claims that his acts are offensive and that Jaya cannot be made to travel with anyone as an adult. He releases Jaya and threatens to arrest Pradeep for both domestic abuse and killing his former wife by burning at the stake if he ever gets his hands on Jaya.
Jaya had requested Poonam, Deepak’s sister-in-law, to draw a portrait of Phool. She then used the drawing to create posters, which she hung in public areas to announce her disappearance and provide contact information in case she was discovered. This allows Phool to eventually find her way back and meet up with Deepak, while Jaya departs for Dehradun to continue her studies.
The movie Laapataa Ladies is both sweet and sour. It contains a number of moving scenes that have a distinct impact since they are laced with a dash of everyday humor. Without any forced features, skin-showing, or cruelty, Kiran Rao creates a feminist drama that is worth seeing.
