India Achieves Historic Milestone & Became 4th Country In The World with Successful of ISRO SpaDeX Mission

India marked a groundbreaking moment in space exploration on January 16, 2025, with the successful completion of the SpaDeX mission (Space Docking Experiment). This remarkable achievement places India among the elite group of nations capable of executing space docking operations, making it the fourth country in the world to do so.

The journey to this milestone began with the flawless launch of the SpaDeX spacecraft aboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)-C60 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on December 30, 2024. The mission showcases India’s expertise in key technologies such as spacecraft rendezvous, docking, and undocking—paving the way for advanced ventures like interplanetary travel, satellite servicing, and space station construction.

What is the SpaDeX Mission?

SpaDeX mission is a cost-effective technology demonstrator mission designed to test in-space docking using two compact satellites. This mission is critical for India’s ambitious future space endeavors, including lunar missions, sample returns, and the establishment of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS).

The SpaDeX mission comprises two small satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), each weighing approximately 220 kg. Both satellites are equipped with cutting-edge features, including solar panels, lithium-ion batteries, advanced sensors, and thrusters. What’s truly remarkable is their androgynous design, allowing either satellite to assume the role of the active chaser during docking.
